POWER TO THE PEOPLE: MARKETING YOUR FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY

So, you want to sell your photographs to the public but can’t seem to get your foot in the doors of the galleries and are wondering where do you go from here? You should know that many artists and artisans have had success marketing their work directly to art buyers, without gallery representation, by participating in art fairs, or by creating their own pop-up events. The advantages are numerous; unlike commercial jobs or gallery shows where you have to wait to be paid; With an art fair or a pop-up, you can make a picture today and sell it this weekend, cash in hand. It can be a great, extra revenue stream that you can partake in as much or as little as you like, but it can also have some pitfalls you would rather avoid.

In this talk, Deborah will discuss both sides of the coin to help you figure out whether these venues are for you, and if they are, how to make them work for you.

DEBORAH GILBERT Deborah Gilbert began her life in the arts as a painter, but painting is a solitary pursuit, so eventually she took up photography simply to get out more. Her widely exhibited photographs, regardless of subject or medium, are her attempt at creating order out of visual or emotional chaos. A veteran Photo Editor and Event Producer, Deborah created the B&H Portfolio Development program, and ran it for six years, with the goal of helping participants change and improve their lives through the joys of creativity.

CHARLES CHESSLER • Tuesday, September 3rd • 6:30p

A PHOTOGRAPHER’S JOURNEY: HOW I WENT FROM HOBBYIST TO WORKING PROFESSIONAL

NYC based photographer, Charles Chessler, will discuss how passion, perseverance, and social media took him from being a guy who loves photography to a guy who is "living the dream" and making his living doing what he loves.

Photography has taken him from birding in his "backyard" of Central Park to Nepal and South Africa and partnering with a Wildlife Conservation Non-Profit that is preserving habitat, saving Rhinos, Zebras, and Giraffes, and working to make a difference in the local community...a dream come true for him...Is it easy? Nope. Are there any guarantees? Nope. But he wouldn't trade it for the world.

CHARLES CHESLER is a NYC based photographer who is passionate about people, nature, and the environment. He makes his living doing headshots, teaching small group workshops, and working with a few socially minded organizations who do work that he believes in. His ongoing project, "Agreeable Strangers" is a labor of love that gives him purpose as a way of celebrating our shared humanity through a simple, random, street-portrait. He is thrilled to be an ambassador for, and partnering with, Wild Tomorrow Fund, a Wildlife Conservation Non-Profit working on the ground in South Africa.

BACKPACKING: PHOTOGRAPHY OFF THE BEATEN PATH

The world is full of wonderful places to photograph wilderness, but the opportunities for the most original images tend to lie off the beaten path. Sherry Pincus, photographer and veteran backpacker, wants to bring you to some of those places. In this presentation, she will discuss how to find unique photos in popular national parks and other natural spaces by hiking and backpacking, venturing far from the overlooks, the information signs and the tourists.  Sherry will discuss how-to-gear-up and the how-to-stay-safe. She will cover everything from day jaunts to overnight camping, from establishing a basecamp to trekking hut-to-hut, from extended backcountry hikes to roaming off-trail into the bush.

The presentation will not be all theory and guidelines. The aforementioned info will be couched in accounts of remote photo trips that Sherry has personally embarked on, in locations such as: Mount Rainier and Grand Tetons, Canada’s Mount Robson and Lake O’Hara, Europe’s Tour du Mont Blanc, New Zealand and Patagonia.

SHERRY BELTRAMINI PINCUS has been backpacking and organizing trips for over 35 years. She has backpacked and photographed extensively in the Pacific Northwest, the Canadian and American Rockies and in places as far away as New Zealand and Patagonia. The mission is always the same…. to share with all the wonders of the backcountry, hoping to inspire others to venture there or at the least to fight to protect these precious and fragile parts of our world.

MEL DIGIACOMO• Friday, September 6th • 10:30a

PHOTOGRAPHY: FREE RANGE, INTUITIVE, FERAL

You know a Mel DiGiacomo photograph when you see it. Mel asks photographers, “When you leave the house, what do you look for?” In this talk, Veteran sports, wedding, street, and zombie-parade photographer Mel DiGiacomo will offer amusingly informative tips and advice about the best ways to make photographs. Jay Maisel once joked of his friend Mel, 'Mel has an incredible eye; unfortunately the mouth comes with it.’ Thankfully, that mouth will be joining us for what promises to be a fun and informative session. Attendees always leave a Mel DiGiacomo talk with a dose of inspiration and a renewed spring in their photographic step.

Mel says, "In the arts, there is no single ‘correct approach’. Esthetics education is a lot messier. Esthetics education keeps asking, ‘what if?’ and ‘why not?’. Esthetics Education says there isn’t one right answer. Don’t be discouraged. Your mistakes are teaching tools. Take this seminar and I’ll do my best to encourage you and offer you courage."

CRIT • Saturday, September 7th • 10a

The back and forth of a Critique (or, ‘Crit’, as it is called in art schools), is important for artists of all mediums. Getting your work out there for feedback helps you to see your photography in new ways and helps you to grow; take what you know about technique, about vision, and about professional practices and let us see what you are doing.

In this Crit, we will project participants’ images on our big screen for discussion. In this way, everyone can learn from the crits of each other's work. But there is nothing to fear here: What we will offer is constructive criticism - never anything mean. We want everyone to leave with a bit of technical insight or the inspiration of an “Aha!” moment.

To be able to participate in the Crit you will need to follow the following submission requirements: Please bring what you consider to be your best 3 pictures, in JPEG form, loaded onto a thumb drive. Please get to the gallery early so your images can be loaded onto our computer and projected onto our big screen for the Crit.

••• Please note: You must register as space is limited. Walk-ins will only be admitted if there is room. •••
